PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In a year of historic achievements, it was only fitting that the eighth-ranked Pace University field hockey team ended the regular season with a 3-1 win over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon. The Setters now enter postseason play with a record of 15-3 in just their third season as a varsity program.
Pace will host its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Tournament game courtesy of earning the league's No. 3 seed. The Setters, who finished the season with a mark of 9-3 against conference foes, will welcome sixth-seeded Assumption College to Finnerty Field on Tuesday afternoon (4 p.m.). Pace defeated the Greyounds in overtime earlier this season in Worcester, Mass.
It was another defensive gem for the Setters against Saint Michael's, as the home team allowed one or fewer goals for the 15th time this season. Senior
Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, CT/Stamford), who was honored during a pregame Senior Day ceremony along with classmate
Margaret Maclean (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial), tallied seven saves in net to nab her 15
th triumph of the season. Â
Sanchez Alvarez caps off her final regular season with the NE10's best goals-against average (0.82) and save percentage (.837). In fact, both marks also rank second in the entire nation.
The Setters put the first tally on the board in the 17
th minute off of
Paige Predmore (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township)'s second tally of the season. The junior knocked in freshman
Lisette de Bruin (Bilthoven, Netherlands/Het Nieuwe Lyceum)'s fifth assist of the year.
Taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the home squad padded their lead less than two minutes into the second half. Junior
Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) knocked in her seventh goal of the season to put Pace up 2-0. Classmate
Halley Rose (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin) earned the assist on the play.
After the Purple Knights cut the lead to just one in the 57
th minute, it was another Rose-to-Kasparian connection that made the final two-goal margin. With zeros on the scoreboard, the Setters capitalized on the game's final penalty corner for their third goal of the game.
Kasparian's two tallies ups her season total to a team-best eight, while Rose now leads the Blue and Gold with six assists.
