Pace Baseball Falls to Le Moyne in 15 Innings; Game Two Moved to Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team took a 5-4 loss after 15 innings at Le Moyne College on Sunday at Dick Rockwell Field. The Setters rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the seventh, but Le Moyne tied it in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings, where the Dolphins eventually won after six additional innings. Pace falls to 18-15 overall and 5-8 in the NE-10 with the loss, while Le Moyne improves to 20-9 and 8-1.

Saturday was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, but because of the length of Saturday's opener, the second game was moved to Sunday, creating a twinbill between the Setters and Dolphins, kicking off at 12 p.m.

Pace trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh inning. A wild pitch brought in Pace's first run, when junior first baseman Garrett De Lotto (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) scored with the bases loaded to cut the deficit in half. Senior catcher Frank Mayo (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) then hit a three-run homer to left-center, putting the Setters up, 4-2. This was Mayo's third home run in the past seven days.

Pace entered the ninth with a two-run lead, but Le Moyne rallied back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. The Setters kept the game alive by throwing out the potential winning run at the plate immediately after the tying run scored. It was not until the 15th inning that Le Moyne was able to bring a run home to claim the 5-4 victory.

Le Moyne's Dylan Swetman picked up the win after four innings of scoreless relief work. Senior reliever Mike Sweeney (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) took the loss in the 15th inning.

Mayo went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and two walks in Saturday's matchup. Junior right fielder Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) hit 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored.

Le Moyne was led by third baseman Gabe Levanti, who hit 3-for-7 with two RBIs. Left fielder JT Pittman hit 1-for-6 with a solo home run. Center fielder Donato DiNorcia hit the walkoff winner, going 2-for-6 with an RBI.

The Setters and Dolphins will now play two games on Sunday, April 17. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
