Game Recap: Softball |

Nelson, Carberry Fuel Pace Softball’s Sweep of Le Moyne

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Junior starter Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) recorded her third-straight shutout in game one, and freshman first baseman Annie Carberry (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek) hit a walkoff single to end game two, leading the Pace University softball team to a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader sweep of Southwest Division rival Le Moyne College on Friday at Pace Field. The Setters won the first game, 5-0, and then picked up a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. Pace improves to 11-6 overall and 5-0 in NE-10 games, while Le Moyne falls to 15-10 and 3-4.

Game 1: Pace 5, Le Moyne 0
Nelson kept her hot streak going in Friday's opener, striking out nine batters and never facing more than four batters in an inning en route to her sixth win of the season. She has gone 21 consecutive innings without giving up a run and has gone the distance in all seven of her starts this season.

Nelson was given plenty of support in Friday's early contest. Sophomore center fielder Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) hit an RBI triple to right in the third to bring sophomore shortstop Ashley Lew (New City, NY/Clarkstown High School North) around to score the first run of the game. Labs later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player Surina Sandhu (Elk Grove, CA/Elk Grove High School) to make it a 2-0 lead for the Setters.

Lew then delivered the big blow in the fourth, knocking in two runs on a single into right field, breaking the game open at 4-0 for Pace. Labs tripled once again to lead off the fifth, and was brought in to score on another sacrifice fly, this time by junior second baseman Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real), putting Pace up, 5-0.

Labs led Pace with a 2-for-3 outing, including two triples, two runs scored and an RBI. Lew batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run. Sandhu hit 1-for-2 with an RBI, while sophomore right fielder Jordan Chillinsky (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad High School) batted 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Le Moyne's Courtney Case, Kelly Mascari and Madison DeRita each went 1-for-3 in the game, accounting for the only three hits allowed by Nelson throughout the game. Le Moyne starter Toni Secreti yielded five runs in 4.2 innings to drop to 7-5.

Game 2: Pace 5, Le Moyne 4
Carberry provided the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh of Friday's finale, hitting a smoking ground ball down the first-base line and into right field to bring Sandhu around to score and end the game with a 5-4 victory. She finished up 2-for-4 in the contest with the game-winning RBI.

Sandhu led off the seventh with a single up the middle after Le Moyne finally gave her a chance to hit. She had been intentionally walked in her previous two trips to the plate, which came as a result of her two-run blast in the bottom of the first that put Pace up, 2-1, in the early goings of the game.

Le Moyne put two runners in scoring position with two down in the top of the third. DeRita picked up a single to left, bringing in Case to tie the game at two.

The Dolphins had two on the in fifth when Mascari roped a single into center field, bringing in left fielder Allison Reynolds to give the Dolphins a 3-2 edge. Pace responded quickly in the home half of the inning after putting two runners in scoring position with two away. Freshman Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) came up to pinch hit, and came through with a double over the center fielder, scoring both runs to put Pace up, 4-3.

Le Moyne first baseman Cara Cawley opened the sixth with a double to left. She was then sacrificed over to third, but could not score on right fielder Lauren Floyd's fly ball to right. Case then came through for the Dolphins, singling to left to tie the game at four. Pace did not score in the sixth, but Sandhu and Carberry came up clutch in the end to give the Setters the win.

Sophomore Jaclyn Flores (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual High School) got the win for Pace after tossing 2.2 innings in relief of senior starters Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame). Flores yielded just one run on three hits to improve to 3-2 on the year. McCann went 4.1 frames in the game, allowing three runs. Le Moyne starter Alexis Eastman fell to 8-4 after giving up five runs in 6.1 innings.

Sandhu hit 2-for-2 with her first home run of the season, two RBIs and three runs scored in game two on Friday. Labs batted 1-for-3 with a run and a double to complete and impressive day at the plate for the Setters' leadoff hitter. Hernandez also went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Ah Soon knocked in two RBIs with her pinch-hit double in the fifth.

Mascari hit 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Le Moyne in Friday's finale. Case batted 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Cawley scored a run and hit a double in her 1-for-2 outing.

Pace hosts Le Moyne for one more game on Saturday to complete the three-game NE-10 series. First pitch from Pace Field is set for 12 p.m.
