Pace Softball Drops Two to Molloy

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Pace University softball team continued its trip down to the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. on Monday, taking on Molloy College in a doubleheader. The Setters fell to the Lions in both games by scores of 8-0 and 5-2. The Setters' record falls even at 4-4 on the year with the losses, while Molloy improves to 7-9

Game 1: Molloy 8, Pace 0 (6 innings)
Pace was unable to get its offense going in the first game, dropping an 8-0 decision after six innings via the eight-rule run. As the home team, Molloy walked off after bringing in the final two runs with one away in the bottom of the sixth.

Chelsea Hawks earned the win for the Lions in game one, holding the Setters to one hit and striking out seven. Senior starter Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) falls to 0-3 on the young season.

Sophomore center fielder Larissa Labs (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School) went 1-for-3 with the lone Setter hit. Left fielder Tracey Balinskas led Molloy with two RBIs and three runs scored in a 3-for-4 outing. Catcher Milan Botte went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 2: Molloy 5, Pace 2
Saturday's later game got off to a fast start for both teams. Botte hit a two-RBI single for Molloy in the top of the first to give the Lions an early 2-0 edge. Pace responded in its first at-bat to tie the game. Labs scored when she and freshman second baseman Lindsey Ah Soon (Ena Beach, HI/Kamehameha Kapalama) executed a double steal to take second and home. Ah Soon later scored on a single by freshman designated player Morgan Kelly (Pawling, NY/Pawling) to tie the game at two runs apiece.

It was not until the fifth that Molloy regained the lead. The Lions brought in two more runs on an error with two away, giving Molloy a 4-2 advantage. They added one more run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to center with runners on second and third, improving their lead to the eventual final score of 5-2.

Jenna Turato got the win for Molloy after allowing two runs (one earned) in the complete seven innings. Junior starter Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) takes her first loss of the year and drops to 2-1 after yielding three earned runs in seven frames.

Kelly hit 1-for-3 with an RBI for Pace. Labs also went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Junior third baseman Surina Sandhu (Elk Grove, CA/Elk Grove High School) matched both of them with her own 1-for-3 outing. Junior catcher Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) batted 1-for-2 with a walk.

Molloy's Botte batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Balinskas hit 1-for-2 with a run scored, while center fielder Olivia Banulski went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

The Setters take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) and the University of Bridgeport in their final day down in Clermont on Tuesday. Their matchup with STAC is set for a 9 a.m. start, while first pitch for the Bridgeport game is slated for 11 a.m.
