PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University baseball team swept Dominican College in a doubleheader on Saturday, picking up the win in a three-game series between the Setters and Chargers at Peter X. Finnerty Field. An eighth-inning rally gave Pace a 7-5 comeback victory in game one, and then senior start
Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout to lead the Setters to a 1-0 win in the finale. The Setters improve to 6-6 on the year with the sweep, while Dominican drops to 4-5.
Game 1: Pace 7, Dominican 5Senior starter
Josh Garran (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) turned in a gutsy performance to pick up the win for Pace in Saturday's opener. He got off to a rough start, as Dominican rallied for five runs after batting around in the top of the first.
Sophomore left fielder
Michael Gulino (Meriden, CT/Maloney) brought the first run in for Pace in the bottom of the third on an RBI single through the left side, leaving the Setters down, 5-1.
The Setters did not score again until the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on third, senior second baseman
Andrew Coffey (Greenwich, CT/Old Avon Farms) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, bringing a run in to make it a three-run deficit. Junior right fielder
Cory Capaldi (Telford, PA/Souderton) added another run for the Setters with an RBI single later in the inning, leaving Pace trailing, 5-3, after six.
The Setters strung together their most crucial rally in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third, Coffey came through again with a single to right, bringing in both runners to tie the game. He also advanced all the way to third on an error by the right fielder. Capaldi then gave the Setters their first lead by roping a single through the left side to score Coffey from third. An error with two away later in the inning brought in the fourth run of the frame for Pace, giving them a 7-5 lead.
After being roughed up in the first inning, Garran went on to keep Dominican scoreless for the rest of the game. In the ninth, he got the first two batters to ground out, and struck out the final batter of the game to pick up the complete-game victory. He improves to 2-1 on the year with the win, and struck out nine batters.
Coffey hit 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs in the opener win. Capaldi knocked in two more runs in a 2-for-3 effort, and Gulino scored once and knocked in another run in a 2-for-5 outing.
Dominican's John-Mike Broderick shouldered the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) in two innings of relief work. Second baseman Justin Decker and right fielder Anthony Bartolomei each hit 3-for-4, with Bartolomei scoring once and adding two RBIs.
Game 2: Pace 1, Dominican 0Mouzakes made Saturday's finale go as quickly as possible, making quick work of the Chargers in a two-hit, five strikeout start to improve to 3-0 on the year. The game went just 80 minutes as neither team was able to produce much on the offensive side through the scheduled seven-inning affair.
The only run of the game was scored on a fielding error by Dominican in the bottom of the third. Capaldi hit a ground ball to the left side, which was misplayed by the shortstop, allowing graduate third baseman
Alec Petrone (Yorktown, NY/Mahopac / Marist College) to score from second and give Pace a 1-0 lead, and eventually the win.
Mouzakes did not allow a run and gave up just two hits in seven innings to stay perfect on the year. Dominican starter Anthony Hunter also turned in a nice start, allowing just one unearned run and three hits, but took the loss to fall to 0-2.
Petrone went 1-for-2 and scored the only run of the game for Pace. Coffey and senior first baseman
Nick LoBello (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) each hit 1-for-3.
Catcher Brandon Simone hit 1-for-2 for Dominican. Shortstop Joseph Libio also batted 1-for-2 with the only other hit for the Chargers.
Pace gets Sunday and Monday off before returning to work on Tuesday, March 15, when the Setters host Post University at Peter X. Finnerty Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
