PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University women's basketball team lost to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at the Goldstein Fitness Center on Tuesday evening by a score of 58-54. The Setters conclude the season with an 11-17 overall and 6-14 in the NE-10 with the loss. SCSU improves to 17-11 overall and 11-9 in conference play.
Junior
Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) registered her seventh double-double of the season Tuesday evening with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dodge also denied a game-best 6 shots to help the Setters record a season-best 13 blocks.
The Setters jumped out to a quick lead as graduate student
Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) finished a layup, and sophomore
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) sank a layup in the first 70 seconds to give Pace an early 4-0 lead. Sophomore
Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) drained a three with 7:20 on the clock and then knocked down a jumper to put the Setters ahead, 9-6, at the 5:39 mark. SCSU went on an 11-2 run for the remainder of the first period and the Setters were heading into the second period with a 17-11 deficit.
After a minute and a half of scoreless play, Rubin laid it off the glass to cut the Setters deficit to four. Freshman
Stefanie Svoboda (Ossining, NY/Ossining) then connected from downtown, and the Setters were down by one. 20 seconds after an SCSU layup, senior
Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) knocked down a jumper, keeping the Setters within one. SCSU made a jumper of its own, but Sher laid it in at the 5:46 mark to make it 21-20. SCSU's Taylor McLaughlin connected on a jump shot, but the Setters answered 13 seconds later with a layup by Maynard with 5:04 remaining to cut the Owls advantage to 23-22. Dodge then made a layup at the 4:06 mark to put the Setters in the lead. Murphy Murad made a jumper to give SCSU the lead again, but with 22 seconds remaining in the second period, Rosalbo was fouled, and was good on both free throws, sending the Setters into halftime with a 26-25 advantage over the Owls.
Maynard opened the third period with a layup at the 9:34 mark to push the Setters ahead by three. After seven unanswered SCSU points, freshman
Alexandra Monteleone (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) finished a layup to chip away at the Owls' lead. 53 seconds later, Dodge rolled one off the glass to tie the game. Freshman
Chelsea Schultz (Commack, NY/Commack) drained a long ball at the 3:21 mark to put Pace up by three. Later in the frame, with 19 seconds remaining, Rubin made a three to leave the Setters with a 39-37 edge heading into the fourth.
Graduate student
Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) connected on a triple to open the fourth, and pushed the Setters' lead to five. Sher made two shots from the charity stripe and Dodge made a layup off a Schultz assist to make it 46-43 lead at the 6:25 mark. SCSU's McLaughlin made a three with 5:27 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 46. She went on to score the next 10 points for the Owls, giving them a 53-48 lead with three minutes to go. The Owls made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to stay on top for a four-point win.
Rubin scored nine points and registered two steals, while Sher added six points and rejected four shots. Maynard tallied six points, five rebounds and matched a game-best six assists for the Setters.
SCSU's Jackie Beathea recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-best 12 rebounds, while Taylor McLaughlin led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Tuesday was also Senior Day for the Pace women's and men's basketball teams. The seniors for each team were honored in a ceremony immediately following the women's matchup.
