PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) scored 17 points but the Pace University women's basketball team fell to Southwest Division leader American International College (AIC) in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at the Goldstein Fitness Center Saturday afternoon by a score of 65-46. The Setters fall to 10-15 overall and 5-12 in the NE-10 with the loss. AIC improves to 21-4 overall and 14-4 in conference play to keep a four-game lead in the division.
The Setters fell behind in the first quarter as they AIC took a 9-2 lead at the 5:47 mark. Senior
Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made a layup at 5:42 which kicked off a 12-5 run which tied the game at 14-14 with 3:09 to go in the first. With nine seconds remaining in the first frame, AIC's Dana Watts made a free throw to end the period with a 22-19 advantage for the Yellow Jackets.
The Setters struggled through the second quarter, finding themselves in an 11-point deficit at the 6:57 mark. With a 1:01 remaining in the first half, sophomore
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) cut AIC's lead to single digits, 36-27, with a jumper. Sher followed that with a jumper of her own with 29 seconds remaining, and the Setters went into halftime trailing 36-29.
Rubin drilled a three to start the third quarter and then graduate student
Jaclyn Oskam (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central / Quinnipiac University) connected on a three of her own at the 9:07 mark to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to just a point. Sophomore
Geena Rosalbo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) drew a foul and made both free throws, giving the Setters a 37-36 lead over AIC. After some back-and-forth, AIC broke out to a seven-point lead again after a three-point play for Kamika Mason. The Yellow Jackets held a six-point lead at 50-44 heading into the fourth.
Pace struggled to score in the final frame, as they were outscored, 15-2, falling by a final score of 65-46.
Rubin added a team-best eight rebounds and three assists to her 17 points. Senior
Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) finished with 11 points and three rebounds, while junior
Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) pulled down seven boards.
Watts registered a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 14 boards. Mason matched Rubin for a game-best 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Brianna Bishop tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and a team-leading five assists for the Yellow Jackets.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, when they host the College of Saint Rose for an NE-10 matchup at the Goldstein Fitness Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
