Pace Football Drops NE-10 Championship Weekend Contest at Merrimack

ANDOVER, Mass. – The Pace University football team visited Merrimack College on Saturday as part of Northeast-10 Conference Championship Weekend. The Setters fell to the host Warriors, 28-18, at Martone-Mejail Field in their final game of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors opened the game with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Brenton Martin to Justin Mount to take an early 7-0 lead with 10:43 to play in the first.
 
- Pace responded by driving down to the Merrimack 19-yard line, where freshman Nick DiCairano (Trumbull, CT/St. Joseph) was good on a 36-yard field goal attempt to make it a 7-3 game.
 
- Shortly after, Shamik Perry broke off an 80-yard touchdown run for Merrimack, giving the home team a 14-3 advantage with 4:50 still left to play in the first.
 
- The Setters took advantage of a botched punt late in the first, starting their last drive of the quarter on Merrimack's 38-yard line.
- Four plays in, sophomore Marquis Pickering (Staten Island, NY/Michael J. Petrides) took a carry 36-yards to the house to cut the deficit to four at 14-10.
- Both teams went scoreless in the second quarter, sending the game to the half with a 14-10 score in favor of the Warriors.
 
- Early in the third frame, Martin hit Armond McRae for a nine-yard touchdown to make it 21-10 for Merrimack, capping off a nine-play, 72-yard drive.
 
- With just under 12 left to play in the fourth, Martin took one himself 59 yards for a touchdown to make it a 28-10 game.
 
- Freshman quarterback Mark Ball (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) threw the first touchdown of his career near the end of the game, tossing a 19-yard score to sophomore Alex Toplyn (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) with 5:59 to play to make it a 28-18 score.
 
PACE LEADERS
- Pickering led the Setters with 99 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, adding another three yards on one reception.
- Toplyn caught four passes for 91 yards and a touchdown.
- Ball passed for 123 yards and a touchdown.
- Senior Delaney Wallace (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) rushed 15 times for 73 yards.
- Sophomore Matthew Ferrara (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) led the Setters with 11 tackles.
- Sophomore Kadeem Langhorne (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) registered 2.5 sacks in the game.
- Jah'Sheem Martin (Freeport, NY/Freeport) and Jasheem Banks (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) each intercepted a pass in the game.
- Senior Gavin Maher (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) picked up a half sack and 4.5 tackles for loss.
 
MERRIMACK
- Martin passed 8-of-14 for 118 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. He also rushed 12 times for 114 yards and another score.
- Perry rushed for 144 yards on 11 carries, scoring a touchdown.
- Mount's only catch went for a 49-yard score.
- Billy Carnes led all players with 12 total tackles.
- Josh Hill and Avery Taylor each had a sack.
