MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior guard
Shelton Mickell (Queens, NY/Cardozo / Central Connecticut State) scored 20-or-more points for the fourth straight game on Saturday, but it proved to be not enough as the Pace University men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference matchup to Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), 90-60, Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The loss leaves the Setters at 8-14 on the year, and 5-9 in NE-10 play, while the Penmen jump to 13-8 overall and 9-5 against the conference.
Mickell scored a game-high 27 points in his 33 minutes on the court. This was also the sixth time in seven games that he has scored 20-or-more in a game. He is averaging 21.4 points per game over that stretch.
Both teams were trading baskets back-and-forth early on, leading to seven lead changes before either team could score 20 points in the game. A three by freshman forward
Ryan Peterson (Wethersfield, CT/St. Thomas More) gave the Setters a 16-15 advantage prior to a media timeout at the 11:13 mark. After this point, the Penmen went on a 17-0 run to take a 32-16 lead, one they did not relinquish for the rest of the game. The Setters closed out the half on an 8-2 run in which all eight points were scored by Mickell, leaving them down, 46-35, at the break.
The Penmen steadily increased their lead throughout the 20-minute second stanza. SNHU's Chris Walters tallied 13 points in the second frame to lead the home team to the win.
Peterson added 14 points for the Setters, and matched freshman guard
Luke McLaughlin (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) with a game-leading six rebounds.
Walters matched Mickell's 27 points to lead SNHU on Saturday. BJ Cardarelli and Jerome Harris each tallied 14 points, while Adrian Oliveira handed out a game-high six assists.
The Setters will look to bounce back when they return to Pace's New York City campus for the first time in over five years on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Pace will host Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Civic Center Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., immediately following the women's basketball matchup between the Setters and Panthers.
