WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore
Gabriella Rubin (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) scored a team-high 14 points, but it was not enough as the Pace University women's basketball team fell to Assumption College by a score of 70-56 in Friday evening's Northeast-10 Conference matchup at the Laska Gymnasium. The Setters fall to 10-10 overall, and 5-7 in NE-10 contests, while the Greyhounds improve to 12-5 on the year and 8-4 in conference play.
The Setters fell behind early on in the first quarter with a 9-2 deficit at the 6:11 mark. Assumption went on to take a 16-10 lead by the end of the first. The Setters adjusted quickly as junior
Kirsten Dodge (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) finished a layup 10 seconds into the second quarter. Pace sustained their energy and Rubin knocked down a three with 2:11 left in the first half to give the Setters a 26-24 advantage over the Greyhounds. At the end of the second period, Assumption's Kelly Conley scored with two seconds remaining to give the Greyhounds a 34-30 halftime advantage.
Similar to the second quarter, Rubin laid one in at the 9:50 mark of the third frame. Assumption went on a 24-11 run from that point. Dodge added two points with 10 seconds to go in the third as the Setters cut the Greyhounds' lead to 58-43 heading into the fourth.
Dodge scored at the 9:34 mark for the first basket of the fourth quarter. The Setters outscored the Greyhounds 13-12 in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Greyhounds held on to win Friday's matchup.
Rubin added five rebounds and two assists to her team-high 14 points, while Dodge finished with eight points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. Graduate student
Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) contributed five points, five boards and four assists.
Assumption's Kelly Carey finished with a game-high 18 points on Friday. Kelly Conley finished with eight points, four rebounds and a game-best nine assists.
The Setters return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 26, when they host Franklin Pierce University for an NE-10 matchup at the Goldstein Fitness Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
