POMONA, N.Y. - Sophomore
Cory Capaldi belted a three-run jack to help the Setters defeat the Nyack Warriors, 5-3. Following the win, Pace advances to 10-10 while Nyac falls to 3-17.
After the Setters failed to get anything going at the dish in the first, they took the field defensively with freshman
Ryan Aquino getting the start on the hill. Thanks to a pair of hits and an error, the Warriors were able to climb out to an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Pace led off the inning with back-to-back singles as
Matthew Kurdewan and
Andrew Coffey each recorded base hits. However a quick strikeout and a double play ended the early Setter threat.
After Nyack tacked on another run in the third, the Setters came up in the fourth inning. After a quick out,
John Kukura and Capaldi drew back-to-back walks.
Domenick Luongo came up next and picked up a single to load the bases. However, once again, a double play ended the inning for the Setters.
Senior
Tom McIntosh took the hill in relief of Aquino in the fourth inning and set the Warriors down in order with three straight fly outs.
After the Setters failed to generate any offense in the top of the fifth, freshman
Jake Amoroso took the rubber in the bottom of the frame and recorded three straight outs after a leadoff walk.
Freshman
Anthony Criscione took the bump in the bottom of the seventh and surrendered a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner, Criscione struck out a pair of batters, both looking, to end the frame.
Pace did their damage at the plate in the eighth inning. Coffey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Tyler Bivona entered the game as a pinch hitter and cracked a double to plate Coffey and cut the Warrior advantage to just two. After
Tom Midolo roped a single, Pace had runners at the corners with no outs. Junior
Nick LoBello came to the dish next and kept the rally going with a single that scored Bivona. Following a fielder's choice, Capaldi came up with men on first and second and crushed a three-run jack to give the Setters a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman
Anthony Sigismondi came in to pitch. He allowed a leadoff single, but forced three consecutive fly outs afterwards. He remained in the game for the ninth inning where he allowed a base hit to begin the inning. Sigismondi preserved the win and earned the save after forcing a double play and a groundout to end the game.
Capaldi went 1-3 at the plate with a three RBIs, all on the long ball that made the difference. Coffey was 2-4 with a run scored while Luongo went 3-4. LoBello and Bivona each recorded a hit and an RBI apiece.
Aquino tossed the game's first three innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out three. McIntosh and Amoroso each pitched one inning, with neither surrendering any hits or runs.
Anthony Rocco tossed one inning and allowed just one hit and no runs. Criscione (1-0) earned the win after throwing one inning and allowing no runs and just one walk while striking out a pair. Sigismondi picked up the save after tossing the final two innings of the contest, allowing just two hits and no runs.
Pace returns to the diamond on Saturday when they travel to White Plains, N.Y. to take on Saint Rose in a doubleheader at Stepanic High School. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
