GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior
Andrew Coffey went 3-4 at the dish with two runs and two RBIs to help the Setters defeat Adelphi 11-1. Following the win, Pace advances to 6-9, 1-2 NE-10 while Adelphi falls to 4-7, 2-1 NE-10.
In the first frame, the Setters climbed out to a commanding 5-0 lead behind four hits. Coffey began the game with a leadoff single to the shortstop. Immediately after, Coffey swiped second base to jump into scoring position. Junior
Frank Mayo came up next and roped a single to right, advancing Coffey to third and giving Pace runners at the corners. Junior
Nick LoBello put Pace on the board during the next at bat as he blasted a double to left field, scoring Coffey and advancing Mayo to third. After an Adelphi error gave Pace another run, sophomore
John Kukura broke it open after he sent a triple to left field to score a pair of runs for Pace. After
Tyler Bivona added an RBI groundout, the Setters ended the frame with a 5-0 lead.
The very next inning, Coffey kicked things off again after he sent a triple to left center field. After LoBello reached on an error, Coffey was able to cross the plate for the first run of the inning. Senior
Tom Midolo singled to center before Kukura was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Back-to-back walks by Bivona and
Michael Gulino advanced the lead to 8-0. Freshman
Paul Piccolino hit a single to right that advanced all runners one base, scoring Kukura. Next, Coffey came up to the plate for the second time of the inning and bombed a double to left field to score a pair and give Pace an 11-0 lead.
Junior
Josh Garran got the start and was impressive early on. He allowed no hits and just a pair of walks in the first three innings of the game.
In the fourth, a singled and a pair of walks combined to load the bases for Pace with one out, but a strikeout and a popup later ended the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, Garran allowed his first hit, but was able to keep the Panthers from crossing the plate thanks to a strikeout and an infield pop out.
After neither team plated a run in the fifth,
Dylan Mouzakes relieved Garran of his impressive outing and pitched a pair of innings. In the sixth, Mouzakes allowed a single but held Adelphi to a scoreless frame. The Panthers struck for the first time in the seventh after a trio of hits forced the score to 11-1 in favor of Pace.
Junior
Michael Forgione entered in the eighth and closed out the game's final two innings.
Coffey and Kukura each went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, with Coffey adding a walk and stolen base. Piccolino went 2-5 at the plate with an RBI while LoBello went 1-6 with two runs scored and a run batted in.
On the rubber, Garran (2-1) earned the win after tossing five innings while striking out four and allowing just two hits and no earned runs. He was relieved by Mouzakes who went two innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Forgione finished out the final two innings and allowed just one hit and no runs.
Pace returns to the diamond this weekend when they take on Southern Connecticut in a three-game series. The two will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28
th at noon before matching up in a single game on Sunday at noon. All games are scheduled to be played at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J.
