CARY, N.C. – Senior
Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) knocked in the game-winning RBI in the top of the tenth inning to push the Setters passed the Golden Falcons in extra innings.
Felician struck first as they knocked in a run with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning to claim a 1-0 lead in the contest.
Pace responded in the eighth inning when they knotted things up. After a two-out walk by
Isaiah Rivera (Newington, CT/Newington High School), junior
Tyler Bivona (East Northport, NY/Northport) blasted a single to center field to plate Rivera and tie things at 1-1. After neither team could plate a runner in the ninth, the two squads headed to extras.
In the first extra frame,
Brett Bittiger (Saylorsburg, PA/Pius X) led off with a single. After a fielder's choice, Rivera singled up the middle to give Pace runners at first and second. Bivona followed the single with a fielder's choice to give the Setters runners at the corners and two outs. Midolo came to the dish next and singled to the shortstop to give Pace a 2-1 advantage.
After pitchers
Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) and
Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) combined to pitch a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning, Pace held on to claim the 2-1 victory over the Golden Falcons.
Midolo went 1-4 with an RBI while Rivera went 1-4 with a run scored.
Robert Rizzitelli (Monroe, CT/Masuk) got the start for Pace, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing just one run and striking out six batters.
Josh Garran (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional), Grant, and Deegan combined to pitch 4.2 scoreless innings. Grant picked up the win, advancing to 1-0 on the season while Deegan nailed down his first save of the young season.
The Setters return to the diamond on Monday, March 16th when they square off with Felician at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Findlay at 2:00 p.m.
