Softball Falls to Saint Anselm in Second Round of NE-10 Championship

NEW HAVEN, CT- The Pace Softball team battled for seven innings but ultimately came up short to the Saint Anselm Hawks 2-1 in the Second Round of the Northeast-10 Championship. The Setters finish the season at 18-22, while the Hawks improve to 27-13 and advance to the semifinals to face host New Haven.

The teams were held off the board until the fifth by Saint Anselm starter Tayla Trask and Pace hurler Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame). The Setters struck first as Samantha Garcia (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) reached on an error to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Garcia moved up on a wild pitch and scored the first run of the game on a single by Rachael McMahon (Corona, CA/Esperanza) (Corona, CA/Esperanza).

The Hawks tied the game in the fifth on a solo homerun by Emily Crannell. Saint Anselm were able to take advantage of a Setter error with two outs to push ahead the eventual go-ahead run in the sixth and held on for the win in the seventh to advance to the semifinals.

For the Setters, Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) and Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) both went 2-for-3 in the game. McCann (11-12) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out four.
