BRIARCLIFF, NY- The Pace softball team fell in the final inning to the Southern Connecticut State Owls in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action 5-4. The Setters fall to 15-20 overall and 9-6 in the Southwest Division, while the Owls improve to 14-18 and 5-10 in division play.
The Owls got on the board in the first inning as they plated a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead. The Setters answered in the third as Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) and Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) (Brewster, NY/Brewster) tied the game with run scoring singles.
Pace took the lead in the fifth as capitalized on a Southern Connecticut error to put the Setters ahead 3-2. Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) extended the Pace lead with an RBI double in the sixth. The Owls rallied back in the seventh as they took the lead, scoring three runs in the inning. Pace got a runner on base in their half of the inning but could not tie the game.
For the Setters, Gellos went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) and Shelby Yung (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland) both went 2-for-4 in the game. Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) started, going the first three innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out one. Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) got the loss in relief, going four innings, allowing three runs on two hits to fall to 9-10 on the season.
The Setters wrap up the regular season with a pivotal three-game series against the Le Moyne College Dolphins. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 25 at 4 pm and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at noon. Prior to the Saturday doubleheader, the team's four graduating seniors will be recognized.
