Baseball Downs St. Thomas Aquinas

PLEASANTVILLE, NY– The Setters scored four runs in the first two innings as Pace defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans 7-4 in non-conference action.

Pace improves to 5-10 on the season, while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 13-9.

The Setters the bats going early in the game as James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in a run with single in the first inning. Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) added a two-run single later in the inning. The Spartans answered with a run in the second but Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) singled in a run in their half of the inning.

St. Thomas Aquinas added a run in the third and the sixth to close to within a run at 4-3. Brett Bittiger (Saylorsburg, PA/Pius X) (Saylorsburg, PA/Pius X High School) doubled in John Kukura (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) in their half of the sixth. Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) added a run in the seventh with a single, while Pjura was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth as the Setters took the win.

For the Setters, Viegas went 3-for-4, while Pjura and Midolo both had two RBI. Ryan Mihalkovitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) improved to 1-1 on the season as he tossed five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out two. Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) pitched a scoreless ninth, to earn his first save of the season.

The Setters travel to Bentley on Friday, April 4 for a Northeast-10 Conference game at 3:30 pm.
