PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University baseball team scored a run in the seventh and two in the eighth as the Setters upended the Saint Rose Golden Knights 5-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest on Friday afternoon.
Pace is now 9-17 on the season, 4-12 in the NE-10, and 3-5 in the Southwest Division. The Golden Knights drop to 11-20 overall, 7-7 in conference, and are 5-3 in the division.
The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Andrew Coffey (Greenwich, CT/Old Avon Farms) (Greenwich, NY/Old Avon Farms) led off with a single. Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) followed with a sacrifice, moving Coffey to second. A groundout would move the runner to third, where he stood when James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) walked to extend the inning. Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) lined a single to left to score Coffey and put the Setters up 3-2.
Pace extended the lead in the eighth when Alexander Rough (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill), Coffey, and Viegas all singled to load the bases with two out. David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) grounded a ball to the right side that was bobbled by the second baseman, allowing Tyler Bivona (East Northport, NY/Northport) (East Northport, NY/Northport), who was pinch-running for Rough, to score. On the play, Coffey never stopped as he rounded third and came to the plate while the ball trickled towards the outfield, extending the lead to 5-2.
The runs were enough for Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) who upped his record to 2-3 on the season, tossing seven innings, allowing one earned run. Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) authored the final two frames to earn his second save.
Pace got on the board in the first inning when Coffey walked and moved to second on a sacrifice before Pjura brought him home with a single. For Pjura, it was the 100th RBI of his Setters career, making him the 17th player in the 67-year history of the program to accomplish the feat. Midolo then doubled down the left field line, scoring Pjura to give Pace an early 2-0 lead. Saint Rose tied it in the seventh when with runners on first and second, Derek Reed singled into left. The ball bounced by the leftfielder, allowing both runners to score.
The Setters and Golden Knights continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Finnerty Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for noon.
