Wright Blasts Two Homeruns as Softball Downs American International

BRIARCLIFF, NY- Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) went yard twice as the Setters took the deciding game of the three-game weekend set 7-4 against the American International Yellow Jackets. The Setters improve to 12-18 overall and move into a tie for third place in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division with a 7-5 mark. The Yellow Jackets fall to 8-18 overall and 2-7 in division play.

American International took an early lead as they plated a run in the opening inning. The Setters answered in their half of the inning as Shelby Yung (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland) led off with a walk, eventually tying the game on a Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) single. Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) (Brewster, NY/Brewster) followed with a double to put runners at second and third. The runners scored on two wild pitches and two batters later Wright hit the first of her two long balls on the day, this one a solo shot to put the Setters in front 4-1.

The Setters added to their lead in the fifth as Larm drew a one out walk and Haley Hernandez (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) (West Hills, CA/El Camino Real) single to advance Larm to second. Wright extended the Pace lead to 7-1 as she blasted a three-run homerun for her third of the season. The Yellow Jackets got three runs back in the sixth but Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) closed the door in relief to move the Setters into a tie for third place in the division.

For the Setters, Wright went 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Larm scored two runs in the game. Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) got the start, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, striking out three to improve to 5-7 on the season. McCann picked up her first save of the season, as she went the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and struck out the final batter of the game to seal the win for Pace.

The Setters are back in action on Tuesday, April 15 as the host Bloomfield College in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 pm.
