YAPHANK, N.Y.- James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) drove in three runs but the Setters fell in their season opener to the New Haven Chargers 12-6. The Setters open the season at 0-1, while the Chargers improve to 1-0.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead as they scored in each of the first four innings, including six runs in the third. The Setters broke through in the third as Pjura drove in the first Pace run of the 2014 season with a single.
Pace capitalized on a pair of Charger errors in the eighth as the Setters scored four runs in the frame. Pjura drew a bases loaded walk for the second run of the innings, while Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. Pjura added to the Setters' total in the ninth with a two-out single to drive in Pace's sixth run of the contest.
For the Setters, Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI, while Pjura was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Wukitsch was also 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game. On the mound, Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) got the start, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits and struck out four.
The Setters return to Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY on Sunday, March 9 as they will face Merrimack College for a doubleheader starting at noon.
