Baseball Downs New Haven in NE-10 Southwest Division Opener

WEST HAVEN, CT- The Setters opened Northeast-10 Southwest Division play on a positive note as they defeated the New Haven Chargers 3-1. Pace improves to 4-9 overall and 1-0 in the Southwest Division, while the Chargers fall to 4-4 and 0-1 in division play.

The Setters got off to a fast start with a pair of runs in the opening inning. David Pepe (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) reached on an infield single and scored on a Chris Gili (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) triple. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) followed with a single to put the Setters up 2-0.

The Chargers sliced into the Pace lead with a run in their half of the first inning. Both teams were held off the board until the seventh where the Setters added an insurance run. Tom Midolo (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) singled with one out and moved to second on a ground out. Midolo reached third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by Danny Wynne (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights).

On the mound, Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) (Goshen, NY/Goshen) and Tim Deegan (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) combined to scatter six hits in the game. Chudy got the start, going the first four innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and struck out five. Deegan (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and struck out three.

The Setters return home on Friday, March 28 as they will host the Dominican Chargers at 2 pm at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville campus.
