Softball Wraps Up West Coast Trip Against Cal St. Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, CA- The Setters wrapped up their trip to the West Coast as they dropped a doubleheader to the Cal St. Monterey Bay Otters. Pace lost the opener 8-6 and fell in the nightcap 10-0 in five innings.

The Setters fall to 1-9 on the season, while the Otters improve to 22-5 overall

In the opener, Shelby Yung (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland) got the Setters off to an early lead as she walked and stole second. Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) put Pace ahead 1-0 with an RBI single.

The Otters took the lead with six runs in the first and added one in the third. Pace rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth as the Setters loaded the bases with two outs. Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) cut the score to 7-3 with a two run single.

Cal St. Monterey Bay got a run back in their half of the fourth but Pace again rallied in the fifth. Drury walked and stole second, eventually scoring on a Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) (Brewster, NY/Brewster) two run homerun. The Setters were not done in the frame as doubles by Alicia Marino (Mahopac, NY/Pleasantville) (Mahopac, NY/Pleasantville) and Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) closed the score to 8-6. Pace was held off the board in the final two innings to fall in the opener.

At the dish, Gellos went 3-for-3 with a double, while Drury went 2-for-3. On the mound, Kira Knight (Benicia, CA/Benicia) started, going 2/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on three hits as she falls to 0-1 on the season. Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) tossed the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out one.

In the nightcap, the Setters were limited to four hits in the contest as Buchbinder went 2-for-2 for Pace. On the mound, Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) fell to 1-4 on the season as she pitched three innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. Knight came on for the final inning, allowing four runs on five hits and struck out two.

The Setters return back to the East Coast this weekend and will open up their home schedule with a pair of Northeast-10 Conference doubleheaders. Pace hosts Saint Anselm on Saturday, March 22 and Saint Michael's on Sunday, March 23 with both twin bills starting at noon.
