Softball Falls to Cal St. Chico

CHICO, CA- The Setters opened their West Coast trip with a doubleheader loss to Cal St. Chico. Pace fell in the opener 7-3 and lost the nightcap 9-1 in six innings. The Setters fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 12-11.

The Setters struck first in the opener as Shelby Yung (Upland, CA/Upland) (Upland, CA/Upland) drew a walk to lead off the game, Yung moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and reached third on an error. Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic) put Pace in the lead with an RBI single.

The Wildcats tied the score with a run in the first but the Setters rallied again in the third. Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) tripled with one out and scored on a Wright single. Cal St. Chico took the lead with three runs in the third to go ahead 4-2.

Pace closed the gap in the fourth as the Setters loaded the bases with two out and got a run back on a Drury RBI single. The Wildcats added three runs in the fourth to pull ahead 7-3.

On the mound, Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) tossed four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits to fall to 1-1 on the season. Kira Knight (Benicia, CA/Benicia) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.

In the nightcap, the Setters again got on the board in the opening inning and Drury and Wright singled with one out. Both runners stole a base and Drury scored on a single by Nikole Larm (Brewster, NY/Brewster) (Brewster, NY/Brewster). The Wildcats took the lead with two runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth, while adding one in the sixth.

On the hill, Kaitlynn Nelson (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) tossed four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, while striking out one to fall to 0-2 on the season. Knight tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out four.

For the twin bill, Drury went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and one RBI, while stealing a base. Wright went 3-for-6 with two RBI and was 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

The Setters continue their West Coast trip as they travel to Holy Names University on Tuesday, March 18 for a twin bill at 4 pm EDT.
