ORANGEBURG, NY-
Kyle Pearson led the Setters with 25 points as the Pace men's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2014-15 season with a 75-68 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. Pace improves to 1-2 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-2.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead they led 7-1 in the first two minutes of play. The Setters rallied with a 27-11 run over the next 11 minutes of play to pull ahead by double figures.
Shelton Mickell dropped in six points in the run, while Pearson led the way with nine points for the Setters.
Jaylen Mann connected on a triple to cap the run at the 7:17 mark to give Pace a 28-18 lead. The Setters held the lead the rest of the half as pulled ahead 42-27 at the break.
Pace added to their halftime advantage as they pushed out to a 20 point lead at 54-34 with 15:01 left in the game. St. Thomas Aquinas made a run as they chipped away at the Setter lead. The Spartans closed the gap to three points at 65-62 with 1:26 left in the game.
The Setters answered on their next possession as Mickell extended the Pace lead to six points as he converted a three-point play with 1:02 to play. Pace headed to the free throw line in the final minute as Mickell was clutch for the Setters as he hit all six of his free throws to lock up the victory.
For the Setters, Pearson led the way with 25 points along with eight rebounds and three assists, while Mickell finished with 19 points.
Bryan Rivers chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while
Khalil Brown totaled 11 points and five boards.
The Setters open up Northeast-10 Conference play as they host The College of Saint Rose Golden Knights on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:30 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
