Lecker Nets 12 Kills in Five-Set Loss to Stonehill

PLEASANTVILLE, NY – Sydney Lecker led the Setters in kills today during a loss against the visiting Skyhawks of Stonehill. After five sets, Pace ended up dropping the tight match, 3-2 (28-26, 25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 7-15).

There was drama early in the Goldstein Fitness Center as the Setters climbed back to steal the first set, 28-26. After falling down 9-4, Pace responded with six unanswered points. Later, the Setters held a 24-18 lead that was quickly washed away by the Skyhawks thanks to eight straight points. Now knotted at 26-all, Lecker and junior Brittani Muller shut the door with back-to-back kills to claim the set, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Similar action in the second set as both teams kept the score tight early and often. The first lead larger than four was reached when Stonehill tossed up a service ace to give the Skyhawks a 15-11 lead. However the Setters showed resilience, claiming eight of the next 10 points to grab a 19-17 lead. After Pace built the lead to 23-22, Lecker put on another clutch performance, hammering down the set with back-to-back kills to give Pace a 2-0 lead.

After dropping the third set, Pace found themselves tied with the Skyhawks at 13 apiece in another tight set. After Stonehill rallied to make it 17-14, Pace once again answered with six of the next nine points to knot things up at 20-20. However the Skyhawks netted five consecutive points to force the action to the pivotal fifth set.

In the final set, Pace jumped out to 2-0 thanks to back-to-back kills by Muller. After Stonehill rallied to put the lead at 8-4, the Setters attempted to climb back into the match but were unable to do so, eventually dropping the set and the match, 7-15.

Lecker added 13 digs to her team-high 12 kills. Muller totaled 11 kills, an assist, and 4.5 blocks. Junior Alyssa Marchino chipped in 11 kills and 17 digs. Junior Rebecca Italiano set her season high in digs, recording 29. Sara Anastasi and Miki Carver each added 22 assists.

The Setters hope to rebound when they return to action on Tuesday, November 4 as they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption.
