PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The Pace University women's basketball team turned in one of their top defensive performances of the season, forcing 21 Merrimack turnovers as the Setters downed the Warriors 59-50 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Wednesday night.
The Setters (2-11, 1-6 NE-10) were led by sophomore Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Long Island Lutheran) who registered her second double-double of the season behind 17 points and 14 rebounds. Both totals marked career-highs for Sher who also hit on 9-of-10 free throws. Junior Shanice Maynard (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson / Coppin State) (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) scored 13 points while freshman Shanice Allen (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) tallied 10, all in the second half.
After Merrimack (7-6, 3-5 NE-10) scored the first five points of the contest, Pace went on a 7-0 run, capped by an old-fashioned, three-point play from Sher to give Pace a lead they would not relinquish in the half.
The two squads played a back-and-forth game in the early stages of the second stanza, trading the lead seven times in the first eight minutes. With the Setters trailing 41-40, freshman Alexa Dietrich (Queens, NY/Archbishop Molloy) hit the front end of a one-in-one, but missed the second. Sher was able to corral the offensive rebounds and kick the ball to Maynard on the wing who buried a three-pointer to give Pace he lead for good with 8:13 remaining.
The Warriors did not go down easily as after Pace built a seven point lead, Merrimack got back to within 51-50, but the Setters went 5-for-6 at the line in the final 38 seconds to seal the victory.
Pace now heads out on the road for their next two contests. Saturday the Setters will travel to North Easton, MA for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against Stonehill. The game is set for a 1:30 tipoff.
