NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich) tossed eight scoreless innings, scattering six hits to lead the Setters to a 1-0 win over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action. The Setters improve to 30-14 overall and move into a tie with New Haven at the top of the Southwest Division with a 13-6 mark. The Owls drop to 20-19-1 overall and 6-13 in division play.
The Setters plated the lone run of the game in the second inning as James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT/Shelton) and Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) singled to start the inning with Pjura moving to third base. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) grounded into a fielder's choice to score Pjura for a 1-0 Setter lead.
Pezzullo (6-3) controlled the game on the mound over his 8+ innings of work, allowing only five runners to reach scoring position in the game. In the eighth, the Owls put runners are first and third with two outs but Pezzullo retired the final batter of the inning on a groundout. Southern got the lead-off batter on base to start the ninth inning as Josh Grant (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) came on in relief striking out one batter and recording the second out on a pick-off. Following a single, Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) picked up his sixth save of the season as he retired the only batter he faced on a ground out as the Setters took the first of three games against the Owls.
For the Setters, Pjura went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) went 2-for-3 in the game. Pezzullo struck out seven batters to earn his sixth win of the season.
Pace and Southern Connecticut wrap up their three-game series on Saturday, May 4 as the teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon in New Haven, CT.
