Pleasantville, N.Y.- The Setters downed the Panthers of Adelphi University in divisional play on Tuesday, 6-2. The Setters advance to 15-7 overall, 7-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference and 4-1 in the Southwest Division while the Panthers drop to 11-11-1 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
The Setters came out hot to start as Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY / Harrison) singled up the middle as the first base runner of the game, followed by Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (NY)) (Prospect, KY / Warwick NY) who walked in the top of the first. James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) (Shelton, CT / Shelton) singled but was able to get two out of it due to a throwing error which brought Galasso home for the first run and put Martineson on third. Joe Solomeno (Holbrook , NY/Sachem East) (Holbrook , NY / Sachem East) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Martineson home and Pjura to third base. Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) singled to the left side for the last hit of the inning, which brought Pjura home and put the Setters up 3-0 to start the game.
Robert Rizzitelli (Monroe, CT/Masuk) (Monroe, CT / Masuk) struck out the first Panther up to bat in the first inning which was followed by a base-hit. The third batter hit to Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT / Westhill) which resulted in a double-play to Jon Kovel (Schenectady, NY/Scotia Glenville) (Schenectady, NY / Scotia Glenville) covering second and then Wukitsch at first to end the inning.
Horn walked as the first batter up in the second inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Michael Viegas (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (Staten Island, NY / Monsignor Farrell). Galasso singled to right field to bring Horn home as the Setters fourth run of the game.
The next few innings would go scoreless until the Setters took offense in the top of the fifth. Pjura got on base by way of walk and then immediately stole second to put himself in scoring position. Solomeno then doubled for the RBI that brought Pjura home to put the Setters up 5-0.
A walk and a hit-by-pitch placed Martineson and Pjura on base for the Setters. They both then stole bases to put themselves in scoring position. Wukitsch was then walked to load the bases but was followed by a Kovel RBI as he also was hit-by-a-pitch that brought Martineson home.
The Panthers managed to get on the board in the seventh as a walked batter rounded the bases on two hits. The Panthers then load the bases before a RBI single brings their second run, and last of the game to bring the score to 6-2.
Solomeno went 2-for-4 at the plate and drive in two RBI's while Pjura went 1-for-3, scored two runs, stole two bases and tallied an RBI on the day. Galasso went 2-for-4 at bat and added a run, a RBI and a stolen base to the box score. Wukitsch and Kovel both contributed RBI's in the Setters winning effort.
Rizzitelli received his second win of the year (2-3) and saw just four hits, zero walks and retired seven batters through six innings of a total of seven pitched. Josh Garran (Old Tappan, NJ / Northern Valley Regional) came in and struck out one at relief for his second save of the season.
The Setters will travel to Caldwell on Thursday, April 4 for a non-conference match-up at 3 pm.
