MURFREESBORO, N.C.- The Pace softball team split a twin bill against Shippensburg University, falling 9-0 in the opener and taking the nightcap 1-0. The Setters are now 3-1 overall, while Shippensburg is 4-2 on the season.
In the opener, the Setters were limited to four hits as Rachael McMahon (Corona, CA/Esperanza) (Corona, CA/Esperanza) went 2-for-3 in the game. Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) dropped her first game of the season (0-1) as she tossed three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) came on for the final four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out one.
In the nightcap, Pace managed four hits but had a big hit in the fifth inning as Erin Wood (Dover Plains, NY/Dover) (Dover Plains, NY/Dover) blasted a solo homerun to put the Setters on the board. That was all starter Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) as she tossed her second shutout in a row to improve to 2-0 on the season. Shea scattered five hits in her second straight complete game shutout effort.
The Setters wrap up their season opening road trip as they travel to Virginia State University for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 3 at 11 am.
