Pleasantville, N.Y.- The Setters went 9-14 from the free-throw line to solidify the win in double-overtime over the Yellow Jackets of American International College (AIC) in conference play, 74-57. The Setters advance to 11-9 overall and 9-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference while the Yellow Jackets drop to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in the conference.
The Setters were ahead by one point with 2:39 to go in regulation before The Yellow Jackets made a free-throw which would eventually send the game into overtime. The first overtime was a back-and-forth battle but it was in the second overtime that the Setters pulled ahead with a triple from Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) (New Windsor, NY / Cornwall Central), a layup from Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) and capitalized on the Yellow Jackets foul-trouble with a team total of 9-14 from the free-throw line.
Four Setters scored in double-digits as Shields led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds while Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) (Pawling, NY / Pawling) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Jessica Scannell (Cork, Ireland/St. Vincents) (Cork, Ireland / St. Vincents) finished with 13 points and six assists while Yuni Sher (Poughkeepsie, NY / Long Island Lutheran) added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Two Yellow Jackets recorded double-doubles as Krista Ferrentino tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds and Sydney Tepley added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ebony Easter contributed 15 points and four assists while Sarah Noble rounded out at 10 points and four assists.
Pace shot 39% from the field, 37% form three-point range and 65% from the free-throw line while AIC finished shooting 36% from the field, 17% from the outside and 67% from the line.
The Setters took advantage of an 11-1 run that they put on the Yellow Jackets throughout the second half that allowed Pace to take their largest lead with 8:15 to go in regulation, 51-41. The Yellow Jackets went 9-11 from the free-throw line over the final three minutes as they chipped away at their deficit and allowed them life in overtime.
The two teams went head-to-head as they came out strong in the first half. Hackett drained two free throws and a triple to start the game. The Setters would fall to the Yellow Jackets 7:45 into the game but would not see more than a three-point differential throughout the entire half. The teams would tie the score three times in the last minutes of the half having allowed them to go into halftime 25-25.
The two teams had very similar numbers in the first half as Pace went 8-24 from the field, 3-8 from three-point range and 6-7 from the free-throw line and AIC went 9-26 from the field, 1-2 from the outside and 6-6 from the line.
The Setters will host the Play4Kay fundraiser as they take on the Chargers of New Haven University on Saturday, February 9 for a 1:30 pm conference match-up. The Setters have faced the Chargers already this season where they took the win, 68-64.
