PLESANTVILLE, N.Y.- Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) became the 16th member of Pace's 100-steal club as the men's basketball team fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University 67-55 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters fall to 9-15 overall and 6-14 in the NE-10, while the Panthers improve to 13-13 and 10-10 in conference play.
The teams battled back and forth in the first seven minutes of play as the Setters held a slim 9-8 lead at the 13:44 mark. Adelphi used a 9-2 run to push out to a 19-11 lead with 8:57 left in the opening half as the Panthers held a 23-15 advantaged at the 7:31 mark. The Setters used a 7-1 burst to pull to within two points at 24-22 with 6:26 to play in the half. The run was capped by Primus-Devonish's 100th and he went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to pull Pace to within a pair. The Panthers raced to halftime with a 14-2 run as Adelphi took a 38-24 lead into halftime.
Adelphi extended the halftime lead at as much as 21 points six minutes into the second half. The Setters slowly chipped away as got as close as 10 points twice in the final five minutes of play. Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) (Union, NJ/Union) netted a put-back dunk at the 4:26 mark to close to with 55-45, while Jaylen Mann's (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) triple at the 2:24 mark kept the score at 10 points at 60-50. Adelphi held the Setters off down the stretch to take the win.
For Pace, Primus-Devonish led the Setters with 19 points, two assists and three steals to join the 100-steal club. Merceus tallied 14 points and eight rebounds, while Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) finished with eight points and six boards.
The Setters return to action on Saturday, February 20 as Pace will host the Greyhounds of Assumption College in an NE-10 match-up at 3:30 pm. Prior to the game, the team's two seniors will be recognized for the careers in a Pace uniform.
