Baseball Splits with Le Moyne; Take 2-of-3 From Dolphins for Weekend

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) tossed 8 2/3 innings in the opener as Pace won 3-1 against the Dolphins of Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action. Le Moyne took game two by a score of 6-1.

The Setters are now 26-17 overall, 16-9 in the NE-10 and lead the division by three games with a 14-3 record. The Dolphins stand at 31-12-1, 16-8-1 and 11-6 in division play. The Setters are ranked #7 in the first NCAA Division II East Region poll, while the Dolphins are ranked second in the region.

In the opener, the Setters got on the board in the first inning as Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) singled and moved to second on a sac bunt. Chaputian moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Le Moyne tied the game in the fourth but the Setters rallied in the ninth. Chaputian doubled and scored as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) reached on an error. Roemer eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as Pace took a 3-1 lead.

Chaputian went 2-for-3 in the opener and scored both runs. Tamburino (6-2) turned in an outstanding performance as he tossed 8 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, while striking out eight to earn the win. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) struck out the lone batter he faced to earn his fifth save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins built a 5-0 lead over the first six innings. Pace got on the board in the seventh on a Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) fielder's choice. Le Moyne added a run in the eighth as the Dolphins took game two 6-1.

Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) went 2-for-3 in game two for the Setters. Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out four to fall to 4-4 on the season. Robert Perez (Bronx, NY/Trinity Pawling) allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.

The Setters return to action on Wednesday, May 2 when Pace will travel to West Haven, CT for an NE-10 Southwest Division game against the University of New Haven at 3:30 pm.
