PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) blasted a walk-off two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Setters to a thrilling 5-3 win over the Greyhounds of Assumption College in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action. The Setters improve to 23-16 overall, 13-8 in the NE-10 and remain in first place in the division with an 11-2 record. The Greyhounds fall to 11-22-1 overall, 5-12-1 in the NE-10 and 4-9 in division play.
The Setters got on the board in the opening inning as Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) tripled with one out and scored later in the inning on a Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) triple. Assumption tied the game in the second as they took advantage of a pair of Pace errors. Pace retook the lead in the third as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) led off with a double and score on a Chaputian RBI single.
Pace held a 2-1 lead until the sixth as the Greyhounds tied the score at two and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the seventh. The Setters rallied in the eighth as Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field as Pace knotted the score in three. In the ninth, Chaputian singled with one out to set up Martineson with the walk-off homerun to give the Setters the win and two wins in three games this weekend against Assumption.
Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) got the start as he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out three. Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) came on in relief going 1 1/3 innings and walked one. Eddie Byrne (Yaphank, NY/Longwood) tossed a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and struck out one to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, April 25 when they will host the Chargers of the University of New Haven in a NE-10 Southwest Division game at 3:00 pm at Pace's Finnerty Field.
