WEST HAVEN, Conn.- Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT.Waterford) provided a key two-run single as part of a four-run fifth inning as the Setters defeated the Chargers of New Haven 4-2. The Setters even their record at 10-10 on the season, 2-3 in the Northeast-10 and 1-0 in the NE-10 Southwest Division. New Haven falls to 11-6, 3-2 and 0-1 in the Southwest Division.
The Chargers got on the board in the third inning with a run to take a 1-0 lead. Pace did all of their damage in the fifth as Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) tied the game with an RBI single. Robert Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) scored on a wild pitcher in the inning and Turnier gave the Setters a 4-1 lead with a two run single. New Haven added a run in the sixth but the Setters pitching stunted a Charger comeback to give Pace the win.
For Pace, Chaputian went 2-for-5 in the game, while Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) also collected a pair of hits. On the mound, starter Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing two run (one earned) on six hits, while striking out 10 to improve to 2-2 on the season. Edward Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and struck out two. Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Pelham Memorial) retired the only batter he faced to end the game and earned his first save of the season.
The Setters return to action for an NE-10 Southwest Division game against the College of Saint Rose on Friday, March 30 at 3 pm at Pace's Finnerty Field.
