Baseball Falls to Bentley 6-4

PLEASANTVILLE, NY-  The Pace University Baseball team lost to the Falcons of Bentley University this afternoon at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida with a final score of 6-4 in the second to last game of the spring break baseball trip.

The Setters got off to a good start with two runs on two hits in the first inning. Chris Gili (Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor)(Waccabuc, NY/Eastport-South Manor) started the rally with a single to right field. Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford)(Waterford, CT/Waterford) then walked advancing Gili to second base.  James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton)(Shelton, CT/Shelton) grounded out to the first baseman advancing Gili and Turnier into scoring position. Gili would score on a wild pitch and Turnier would score on a Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff)(Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) single to first base to give the Setters a 2-0 lead.

Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity)(Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) made the start on the mound for the Setters. He would give up an early run in the third inning and Bentley would tack on two more runs in the fourth with a two run homerun from Bentley's Bryant Johnson to make the score 3-2 Bentley going into the fifth inning. The Falcons would strike again in the sixth when catcher Greg Baggett singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Center Fielder Sean Keady and second baseman Logan Gillis followed with two singles to make the score 5-2 heading into the late innings.

Pace would rally back in the seventh inning with a Steve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot)(Bohemia, NY/Connectquot) single. Sterlacci would advance to third on a single by Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley)(Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) and scored on a fielder's choice by Gili. The Setters continued their rally in the eighth inning with 2 runners on base, pinch hitter Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick)(Warwick, NY/Warwick) hit a line drive single to left field scoring Pjura making the score 6-4.

Tamburino takes the loss for the Setters, making his record 1-2 on the year. He allowed five runs on nine hits in 6 innings of work with two strikeouts. Freshman Tim Deegan (Levittoqn, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) would replace Tamburino in the seventh inning and threw a solid three innings of relief allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-5 performance and Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff, NY/Briarcliff) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Setters return to action tomorrow March 17 at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park, Florida in the final game of the spring break trip against Stonehill. First pitch is at 10:00 am.
