WORCESTER, Mass.- The Setters suffer a tough loss to the Greyhounds of Assumption College, 67-62. Pace now stands at 13-12 overall, 11-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference and are in a three-way tie for sixth place with Bentley and Southern Connecticut State. Assumption advances to 12-13 overall and 10-11 in conference play.
The Setters opened the first half up strong going 13-9 in the first six minutes. The Greyhounds chipped away and tied the score at 14 with 11:54 in the half. Assumption took their first lead at 9:35 and maintained just a slight lead for a few minutes before going up as much as 11 points with 1:24 to go in the half. A triple by Justin Alston (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) and a pair of free-throws by Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) brought the Setters within seven to go into half at 32-25.
The most the Setters trailed the Greyhounds the entire second half was by eight, but a majority was within a four point or less margin. With 1:24 left in the game, a layup by Williams brought the Setters within one at 62-61. Assumption connected on a triple before Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) made a free-throw with 18 seconds left in the game to bring the Setters within three at 65-62. Pace sent Assumption to the foul-line with 17 seconds left for the last baskets made of the game.
The Setters shot went 22-for-51 from the field, 3-for-8 from three-point range and 15-for-27 from the free-throw line. The Greyhounds shot 21-for-41 from the field, 9-for-17 from the outside and 16-for-19 from the line.
Ronson Quick led the way for the Greyhounds with 23 points and six rebounds while Ryan Rozsnaki finished with 11 assists and nine rebounds. Kevin Donahue contributed 16 points and Cory Schmidt added ten points.
Despite the loss, three Setters scored in double digits with Williams leading the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Jon Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) finished with 17 points and four rebounds, while Primus-Devonish contributed 13 points. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) led the team in assists with three and Alston finished with eight points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
The Setters finish the regular season on the road at Le Moyne College Monday, February 20 at 7:30 pm.
