WORCESTER, Mass.- The Setters, ranked #4 in the first NCAA East Region Poll, held off a second half surge by the Greyhounds of Assumption College as Pace won going away 70-55. Pace clinches the #3 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference as they improve to 19-6 overall and 16-5 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds drop to 17-8 and 14-7 in conference play.
The Setters raced out to an early 14-0 lead in the first five minutes and led by as much as 24 points at 30-6 with seven minutes to play in the half. The Greyhounds rallied as they pulled to within eight points at 33-25 with under a minute to play before the Setters got a late bucket by Maral Javadifar (Flushing, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) (Flushing, NY/Mary Louis Academy) to take a 35-25 lead at the break.
Assumption closed the gap early in the second half as they pulled to within four points at 37-33 on a Gabrielle Gibson lay-up. The Setters outlasted the Greyhounds the rest of the way as they slowly built a double-digit lead as Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) connected on a triple with five minutes to play to give Pace a 53-43 advantage. The Setters headed to the free throw line in the final four minutes as they went 11-for-12 from the stripe with Kerri White (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy/Manhattan College) going 6-for-6 and Carol Johnson (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) and Cleary going 2-for-2 each down the stretch.
For Pace, Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) led the way with a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. White totaled 10 points and five rebounds for the Setters, while Cleary chipped in 11 points and three assists. Johnson tallied 16 points and six rebounds. Johnson also dished out a pair of assists as she becomes the 22nd member of Pace's 250-assist club as she finished the game with 251 for her Setter career.
With the win, the Setters secure third place in the NE-10 Conference and will host the #6 seed on Sunday, February 26 on the Goldstein Fitness Center. The NCAA Regional Advisory Committee released its first regional rankings of the season with the Setters holding the #4 spot in the East Region. Pace closes out the regular season on Monday, February 20 as they will travel to Syracuse, NY for an NE-10 game against Le Moyne College at 5:30 pm.
