EASTON, Mass..- The Pace University men's basketball team fell short to the Stonehill College Skyhawks 73-68 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters fall to 9-10 and 7-8 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks improve to 14-5 and 11-4 in conference play.
In a wild first half, the Setters came out firing as they connected on five triples in the first eight minutes to build a 21-9 lead. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary's Ryken ) and Kevin Clark (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore/St. Johns University) (Dunmore, PA/Deunmore/St. John's) each hit two triples in the run. The Skyhawks rallied with a 15-3 run to they answered with five three pointers to put them in the lead at 34-24. Pace rallied as they pulled to within four points at 38-34 on a lay-up by Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) (Hackensack, N J/Hackensack/Iona College) with just over a minute to play. The Skyhawks got a late free throw and led 39-34 at the break.
Pace held serve for most of the second half as they trailed by six points midway through the half but Stonehill extended it to 10 points at 57-47 with nine minutes to play. The Setters answered with an 8-0 to slice the score to two points at 57-55 with just over five minutes to play.
Stonehill rallied with an 11-0 burst to lead by 13 at 68-55 but Pace chipped away and pulled to within four points at 50.3 seconds on a three-point play by Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College). Stonehill headed to the line down the stretch and went 4-for-4 in the final minute to hold off the Setters.
For Pace, Williams led the Setters as he just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds along with two steals. Primus-Devonish totaled 12 points and six assists, while Smith finished with 10 points. Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) posted 10 points and four rebounds in the game.
The Setters are back in action on Tuesday, January 31 when Pace will host American International College for a Northeast-10 Conference game at 7:30 pm.
