BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- The Setters dropped a Northeast-10 Conference twin bill to the Greyhounds of Assumption College, losing 3-1 and 12-9 in the nightcap. Pace falls to 20-8 overall and 8-6 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds improve to 16-9 and 9-3 in conference play.
In the opener, the Setters got their lone runs in the second on a solo homerun by Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy). The Greyhounds took the lead in the fifth as Nikki Boris hit a three-run homerun. Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) tossed a complete game as she gave up three runs on nine hits to fall to 6-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, Assumption jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning on a two runs homerun. The Setters rallied in the third as they loaded the bases and drew two walks along with a hit by pitch for three runs. Gellos has a key RBI single, while Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) had the big hit of the inning as she drove in three runs with a double.
Assumption chipped away as they scored five runs in the fifth inning to pull to within a run at 8-7. The Greyhounds took advantage of two Pace errors in the sixth as they jumped ahead 9-8. The Setters rallied in the bottom of the eighth as Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic High School) (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) blasted a solo homerun to tie the game at nine. Assumption hit two homeruns in the top of the seventh as they scored three runs to take a 12-9 lead. The Setters got a runner on in the bottom of the inning but fell short of a comeback.
For the Setters, Drury went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Buchbinder was 2-for-3 with three RBI's. On the hill, Kayla Hill (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison High School) (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) started, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, while striking out four. Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) tossed two innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits to fall to 2-3 on the season. Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) retired both batters she faced in the final inning.
The Setters are back in action on Friday, April 6 when Pace will travel to Lowell, MA for a Northeast-10 Conference twin bill against UMass Lowell at 2 pm.
