EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.- The Setters opened their 2011 season with a 56-14 loss to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University in non-conference action. Pace opens the season at 0-1, while the Warriors start the season at 1-0.
The Warriors controlled the opening half as quarterback Ray Wagner tossed six touchdowns with two each going to Dusty Reed and Robert Bleiler. For the Setters, Eshawn Armstrong (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) (Middletown, NY/Middletown) carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards on the ground, while David Lopez (Ozone Park, N.Y./Christ the King) (Ozone Park, NY/Christ the King) led the Pace defense with eight tackles (six solo). East Stroudsburg would take a 42-0 lead into the halftime break.
Pace broke through late in the third quarter as sophomore quarterback Jordan Raynor (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton) (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) led the Setter offense on an 11-play, 91-yard touchdown drive. Raynor capped the scoring drive with a 10-yard pass to Armstrong as the Warriors led 49-7 after three quarters of play.
Raynor would lead the Setters on another touchdown drive midway through the fourth quarter as he would hit Patrick Lupfer (Mineola, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) for a 26-yard touchdown as Pace trailed 49-14 with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter. The Warriors scored late in the quarter as they would win by a final score of 56-14.
For the game, Armstrong led the Setters with 18 carries for 95 yards on the ground. Raynor tossed for 185 yards in the air on 20-for-32 passing and two touchdowns. Lupfer led all Pace receivers with five receptions for 53 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Lopez posted a game-high 12 tackles with a fumble recovery.
The Setters return to action next Saturday, September 10 for their home opener against Stonehill College at 1 pm at Pace Field on its Pleasantville campus.
