KLINGELE'S 18 SECOND HALF POINTS POWERS PACE TO VICTORY
NEW HAVEN, CT- Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St.
John Villa) scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half
to lead the Setters upset over the Owls of Southern Connecticut
78-77 in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters improve
to 8-15 overall and 7-11 in the NE-10, while the Owls drop to 14-9
and 10-8 in conference play on the season.
Southern Connecticut controlled most of the opening period,
building up a 31-17 lead with 3:46 remaining in the first half. The
Setters bounced back, closing out the half on an 11-3 run to close
the gap to six, trailing 34-28 at the break. The Owls shot
15-for-32 (46.9%), while the Setters connected on 11-of-28 (39.3%)
from the field. Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) and Stephanie Rossmy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island,
NY/St. John Villa) each netted nine points in the first
half, with both scoring four points apiece in the Setters run.
The Setters came out firing in the final period as they rallied
with a 12-0 run early in the period closing the gap to one point at
44-43 with 14:58 left in the game. Pace would keep the pressure on
the Owls and the Setters would pull even for the first time in the
game as Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor) (Windsor, CT/Windsor)
nailed a triple to knot the game at 48 with 13:09 left to play. The
rest of the game was a see-saw battle with neither team leading by
more than three points and the teams were tied 12 times.
Down the stretch, Rossmy put the Setters ahead by one with pair
of free throws at the 2:21 mark, while Klingele also hit a pair
from the charity stripe to make it a 75-72 Pace lead with 1:29 to
go in the game. The Owls' Rochelle Johnson sliced the lead to one
with a jumper at the 1:14 mark but R ossmy hit 1-of-2 from the line
to put the Setters back up by two. Southern Connecticut would tie
the game at 76 for the 12th and final time on a lay-up
by Jacqueline Johannes. Rossmy would once again give the Setters
the lead with a bucket at 56 seconds left in the game. The Owls
would miss a three-pointer on their next possession but Kate Lynch
would grab the offensive board and get fouled with 2.2 seconds on
the clock. Lynch would hit the first but miss the second shot and
the Setters' Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St.
Peter's) would come away with the rebounds with 00.7
seconds remaining in the game. Welsome would fail to convert both
from the line but the Owls would not have enough time to get a shot
off as time expired giving the Setters the one-point victory.
For Pace, Losey (21) and Klingele (20) combined for 41 points in
the game, with Klingele posting a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Rossmy finished with 14 points, while Huggins rounded out the
double-figure scorers netting 10.
For Southern Connecticut, Lynch recorded a double-double with 25
points and 10 boards, while chipping in seven assists. Michelle
Martinik tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Pace returns to action when they host Saint Michael's College on
Saturday, February 16 as the Setters will host "Think Pink" Day in
support of breast cancer research. . The Northeast-10 Conference
game is scheduled for a 1:30 pm tip-off.
