Box Score WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO #3 SOUTHERN
CONNECTICUT
New Haven, CT - Southern Connecticut set a new school record for
consecutive wins as they defeated Pace University 54-49 tonight, at
J.W. Moore Field House. Junior Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.)
scored 18 points to lead the #3 Owls.
Southern Connecticut led by as many as 14, but Pace went on a
21-12 run and held Southern Connecticut scoreless for over five
minutes in the second half. The Owls would not be denied as
Babette Noah (Yaounde, Cameroon) converted a lay up with 48 seconds
remaining to put the Owls up 52-47. Pace would only score two
more points the rest of the way as Shamika Jackson (Manchester,
Conn.) and Lynch converted their free throw opportunities in the
final seconds of the game.
The game remained a close one throughout the first half as the
two teams would not allow the other to pull away. Southern's
largest lead came at the 8:24 mark and again at the end of the half
at seven points. Lynch hit a fade-away jumper at the buzzer
to put the Owls up 27-20 going into the break.
The Setters climbed back in immediately to start the second half
and were down by just three when Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten
Island, NY/St. John Villa) converted a lay up from
Liran Buchris (Massad, Israel/Great Neck South) (Massad, Israel/Great Neck South),
who finished the night with a game-high three assists.
However, the Owls went on an 11-0 run to take a 14 point lead just
six minutes into the half thanks to a lay up by Jackson.
The Owls would continue to pull ahead as four different players
would score over the course of the next 10 minutes to keep the Owls
up 12. It wasn't until a lay up by Juana Andrews with just
over five minutes remaining that the Setters were able to pull back
into the game. A 9-0 run by the Setters would put them within
three, but Noah converted a lay up and put the Owls back up by
five.
With just 14 seconds remaining Southern Connecticut led by just
three, but a turnover and two good free throws from Lynch would
seal the game for the Owls.
Noah finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her
fourth double-double of the year and second in four games.
NE-10 Co-Player of the Week, Jackson, finished the game with nine
points and five rebounds.
