2016-17 Pace Athletics Top Moments: Women's Lacrosse

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - As we head towards the new school year, Pace Athletics takes a look back at the 2016-17 campaign by featuring some of the biggest wins, clutch performances and top moments from each of our teams throughout the year. Next up is our women's lacrosse team.

In just their third year as a varsity program, the Setters continued to make impressive strides in 2017, spending the entire season as a nationally ranked team, and reached as high as No. 11 in all of Division II. They finished the year as the No. 18 team in the nation and set a new program record with 11 wins.

The Setters set the tone early in the season, picking up victories over nationally ranked opponents Grand Valley State University and Bentley University as part of a seven-game win streak. Casey Gelderman (Farmingville, NY/Sachem High School East) led the way against Grand Valley State (ranked No. 12 at the time) with five goals, while Courtney Pabst (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) tallied seven points in a 15-2 win over the Falcons (ranked No. 19).

Pace also turned in an impressive performance against then-No. 1, and eventual National Champion Adelphi University by being the only team to score in double-figures against the Panthers in a 19-10 defeat.

The Setters finished the regular season in fifth place in the NE10 after going 9-4 in conference play, including a crucial 13-12 decision at Franklin Pierce where Abby Haimson (Montville, NJ/Montville) registered six points, including the game-winning goal that helped seal a second-straight appearance in the conference tournament.

Six Setters earned spots on the NE10 All-Conference Team as Gelderman, Haimson and Najmah James (Danbury, CT/Danbury) were all picked for the first team. Pabst earned a spot on the second team, while freshmen Alexa Punzone (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) and Mary Kate Lonegan (Brewster, NY/Brewster) each made the All-Rookie Team.

In addition, Haimson and Pabst were both named to the IWLCA Division II All-North Region Team, with Gelderman landing on the first team, Haimson on the second team and Pabst on the third team. Gelderman and Haimson were then named to the IWLCA Division II All-America Team, as Gelderman was selected to the second team, and Haimson to the third team, making them the first Setters to ever be named All-Americans. James closed it out with NE10 All-Academic honors.

Check back as we continue to recap some of the biggest highlights of the 2016-17 season.
