GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The Pace University women's lacrosse team has been named an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad and three individual student-athletes,
Makayla McDermott (Greenlawn, NY/Elwood-John Glenn),
Najmah James (Danbury, CT/Danbury), and
Gabrielle Iaconiello (Oakdale, CT/Montville) were named to the IWLCA Zag Sports Division II Academic Honor Roll. The IWLCA announced its awards on Wednesday.
Pace is one of 300 teams across all of NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA to be honored for 2016-17. In order to qualify for this honor, the women's lacrosse team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the year. The Setters accumulated a 3.36 team GPA across the 2016-17 academic year. This is the third consecutive year in which the Setters received this award. McDermott, James, and Iaconiello are three of only 244 student-athletes from 69 different NCAA Division II institutions. To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.
Pace landed 24 student-athletes on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, more than any other women's lacrosse team in the NE10. James highlighted the spring academic honors with a spot on the Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference team.
The Setters finished the year ranked No. 18 in the country by the IWLCA. Pace remained in the national rankings for every week of the 2017 season, starting at No. 20 in the preseason poll and reaching as high as No. 11 during the season. The Setters won a program-record 11 games in 2017 and qualified for the 2017 NE10 Conference Championship for the second year in a row. Pace improved from the No. 8-seed to the No. 5-seed for this year's NE10 Conference Tournament. The Setters set a team record with seven-straight victories that brought them to 7-1 midway through the season, and also twice set the team's single-game goals record with 21 against Queens College and Saint Anselm College.
