PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Following a pair of conference wins last week, the seventh-ranked Pace University field hockey team was awarded with a pair of Northeast-10 Conference weekly honors on Monday. Sophomore
Louisa Wegener (Hamburg, Germany/Wilhelm Gymnasium) was named the league's defensive player of the week, while senior
Lesly Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, CT/Stamford) nabbed her second-straight goalkeeper of the week honor. Junior
Jane Kasparian (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), who scored a goal in each of Pace's contests last week, was named to the NE10 Honor Roll.
Wegener earned the start in both of the Setters' victories last week, playing the full 70 minutes in each game. Solid defensive play has been part of the recipe for success for Pace all season long, with one of their strongest performances of the year coming against No. 4 LIU Post last Tuesday. Wegener recorded her first defensive save of the season against the Pioneers, stopping the third LIU Post shot in the span of less than minute late in the opening half. The key save and series of defensive plays limited the Pioneers to just a single goal, and helped fuel the Setters to a 2-1 win.
The Setters have won NE10 Defensive Player of the Week honors four out of the six weeks this season. Wegener joins junior
Paige Predmore (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township), who won the award last week, and senior
Margaret Maclean (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial), awarded the honors on Sept. 11 and Sept. 18.
Sanchez Alvarez allowed just one goal in Pace's two wins last week. The senior racked up a season-high 11 saves in the triumph at LIU Post, including a crucial stop in the 66
th minute on a Pioneers' breakaway. She followed that up by recording her seventh shutout of the season on Saturday against Bentley. All in all, Sanchez Alvarez totaled 17 stops on the way to improving to 11-1 in net this season. Sanchez Alvarez, who has yielded just six goals all year, now leads the nation in both save percentage (.893) and goals-against average (0.49).
Winners of five straight games, the Blue and Gold host Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
