Lecker’s 22 Kills Lead Pace Volleyball to Conquest of Adelphi on Homecoming

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – In front of a crowd of 1,137 vocal fans, the Pace University women's volleyball team took down Northeast-10 Conference rival Adelphi University Friday evening at the Goldstein Fitness Center in four sets. Junior Sydney Lecker (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) threw down a Setter season-high 22 kills to lift Pace to a huge Homecoming Weekend victory.
 
RESULTS
Pace 3, Adelphi 1 (25-20, 25-12, 16-25, 25-23)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- Adelphi took control early on, running out to a 7-3 lead, but the Setters came roaring back to tie it up at 10-10.
- A four-point run swung the momentum in the Setters' favor, as they took a 15-12 advantage.
- After the lead was cut to one at 20-19, Pace won 5-of-6 to close out the first frame with a 25-20 victory.
 
SET 2
- The Setters came out firing in the second set, sprinting out to a 12-3 lead.
- Pace's lead grew as high as 14 points when the Setters pushed the score to 20-6.
- The Panthers took three of the last five points in the set, but sophomore Claudia Fontanet (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina)'s kill wrapped things up for a 25-12 win.
 
SET 3
- Pace held a 6-5 edge early in the third game, but the Panthers took 6-of-7 to grab an 11-7 lead.
- Another run left the Panthers leading, 15-8, and their lead later extended to 21-12.
- The Setters were able to get back within six, but the Panthers finished strong to take a 25-16 win and stay alive in the match.
 
SET 4
- The fourth set was as competitive as it gets, with both teams trading points until Pace held a 13-12 lead.
- The Setters then pushed their lead out to 16-12, and kept the momentum rolling until they held a late 22-16 advantage.
- Adelphi turned things around with back-to-back kills by Melissa Rigo, leading to a six-point run that tied up the set.
- Both teams traded points to reach a 23-23 stalemate, but back-to-back emphatic kills by Fontanet closed out the match to give Pace the win.
 
PACE LEADERS
- Lecker led all players with 22 kills on the night, and completed a double-double with 11 digs. She also hit .309 on the evening.
- Fontanet had a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 10 digs.
- Junior Amy Vicic (Surrey, British Columbia/Earl Marriott) had a strong night, dishing out a match-best 49 assists while also picking up 12 digs.
- Senior Samantha Marquez (Palmetto Bay, FL/Miami Palmetto/Palm Beach State College) led the floor with 24 digs in the win.
- Sophomore Kathleen Benson (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and freshman Tatjana Calimpong-Burke (Waianae, HI/Iolani) each had a pair of blocks on the night.
 
ADELPHI
- Rigo and Mandy Stanislovaitis registered 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
- Rigo completed a double-double with the addition of 14 kills.
- Megan Manierski also picked up a double-double with 23 assists and 14 digs.
 
CONTINUED SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT
- At 13-4 on the year, the Setters are now just one win shy of their total from 2015.
- The 13 wins are also more than triple the Setters win totals from both the 2013 and 2014 season.
- Pace's victory over Adelphi was its first over the Panthers since the 2010 season.

UP NEXT
- The Setters take the rest of the weekend off before returning to action against Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
