ALPHARETTA, GA- Longtime Pace Football Head Coach and Pace Athletics Hall of Fame member George Maier has passed away at the age of 88. Coach Maier took over the reins of the Pace Football program in 1973 and held that position for 16 seasons. He was integral in the program moving from club to varsity status in 1978. In his 16 seasons, he posted an overall record of 79-59-4 for a .570 winning percentage.
Maier, who coached at Fordham University and Iona College prior to his arrival to campus, is the all-time winningest coach in Pace Football history posting a 52-48-2 varsity record for a .520 winning percentage. His team captured the program's second Met Bowl Championship in 1973. In 1978, Maier led the Pace Football team to the Metropolitan 8 Conference Football Championship and was recognized as the 1979 ECAC Coach of the Year.
Under Coach Maier's leadership, 45 individual records were set while 25 single season records are held by teams that he guided. He also holds the individual coaching record for consecutive wins with seven straight starting with the final two games of the 1978 season and concluding with a tie on October 13, 1979.
Coach Maier was inducted into the Pace Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and is looked at by many alumni and friends as one of the most influential figures in Pace University Athletics history.
A memorial service and ceremony is being planned on the day of the first home football game at Rye High School in Rye, NY this fall. More details will be finalized shortly.
